Some universities are defined by their age. Others by their rankings. Victoria University of Wellington, officially known as Te Herenga Waka, stands out for something rarer: its position at the centre of power.

Founded in 1897 and located in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, Victoria sits right next door to Parliament, government ministries, and the country’s most influential institutions. That proximity is not just symbolic; it shapes the kind of education you get, the connections you build, and the career you walk into after graduation.

Ranked 240th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, Victoria remains consistently in the top 2% of universities worldwide and has held a place in the QS top 300 every year since 2010. Victoria University of Wellington is also one of only 24 universities globally to be rated Five Stars Plus, the maximum possible rating in the QS Stars system.

With around 17,000 students, a strong research culture, and programmes spanning law, business, science, humanities, architecture, and engineering, Victoria offers the full academic experience in one of the most liveable and culturally rich cities in the Pacific.
