The University of Adelaide opened on 29 January 2026, born from the merger of two respected Australian universities. It sits in the world’s top 100, belongs to Australia’s elite Go8, and is based in one of the country’s most affordable cities.

What is the University of Adelaide?

Blog image

The University of Adelaide officially opened on 29 January 2026. It was formed by merging two well-established institutions, the University of Adelaide (founded 1874, Australia’s third-oldest university) and the University of South Australia (UniSA). Together, they created one of Australia’s largest universities with around 70,000 students.

This is not just a name change. Every programme was redesigned from scratch, combining the best of both universities into a single, future-focused institution. It is a Go8 member, ranked in the world’s top 100 in its very first year, and located in one of Australia’s most liveable and affordable cities.

If you were already enrolled at the University of Adelaide or UniSA, your studies and credits will be transferred automatically to the University of Adelaide.

When applying in 2026 and beyond, apply directly to the University of Adelaide, not to the University of Adelaide or UniSA separately. Those institutions no longer accept new applications.

NOTE: Be sure to explore other top universities to study in Australia to broaden your perspective and find the environment that suits you best.

How Does the University of Adelaide Rank?

  • 82nd: QS World University Rankings 2026
  • 8th in Australia QS 2026
  • 128th: Times Higher Education (THE) 2025
  • 151–200: Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) 2024

Entering the world’s top 100 in its very first year as a merged institution is a strong result. The University of Adelaide is only going to grow from here.
