What Is the University of Sheffield?

Blog image

The University of Sheffield is one of the UK’s most respected universities, a founding member of the Russell Group and one of the original red-brick universities, established in 1905. Over 30,000 students from 150+ countries study here, with more than 10,000 of them international students.

Sheffield has built a reputation for two things that genuinely matter: exceptional research and an outstanding student experience. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 92% of Sheffield’s research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. At the same time, it was named University of the Year for Student Experience by the Times and Sunday Times 2026, and its Students’ Union has been voted 1st in the UK in the National Student Survey two years running.

That combination of serious research and serious student experience is rarer than you might think among the top 100 universities.

Sheffield also has 5 Nobel Prize winners associated with its faculty and research departments and the Insigneo Institute, one of the world’s leading computational medicine research centres, based right on campus.

Sheffield jumped 13 places in QS rankings in one year, from 105th in 2025 to 92nd in 2026. It also sits 12th in the UK (THE 2025). This is a university clearly on an upward trajectory, not coasting on historical reputation.
