THE World University Rankings 2027: What’s New, How It Differs from QS & What to Watch For

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, founded in 2004, is one of the most widely cited and respected global university ranking systems. It is designed specifically to assess research-intensive universities across all their core missions – teaching, research, citations, industry connections, and international outlook.

For the 2027 edition, a record 2,297 institutions will be ranked, an increase of 4% on last year’s 2,191, representing universities across 118 countries and territories.

The ranking is underpinned by data submitted directly by universities, supplemented by THE’s Academic Reputation Survey, which was conducted between November 2025 and February 2026 with a balanced spread of responses across disciplines and countries.

THE uses 18 performance indicators grouped into five core pillars. Understanding these pillars is essential to understanding what a THE rank actually means – and how it differs from QS.

Teaching – 29.5%

This pillar covers the learning environment, including the student-to-staff ratio, the proportion of doctoral graduates, institutional income, and THE’s Academic Reputation Survey responses on teaching quality. It is the largest single pillar in the THE methodology.

Research Environment – 29%

Covers research income normalised by staff numbers, research productivity measured through publications, and the institution’s academic reputation for research as surveyed by THE. Institutions with strong funded research pipelines score highly here.

Research Quality – 30%

This is where THE differs most significantly from QS. Research Quality – the highest-weighted pillar at 30% – measures citation impact, research excellence scores, and industry income derived from knowledge transfer. It uses Elsevier’s Scopus database to analyse how often a university’s research is cited by other researchers globally.

Importantly, in 2024 THE added an additional measure looking at the number of institutions whose academics vote for a particular university in the reputation survey – a refinement designed to reduce the outsized impact of a small number of highly connected institutions.

International Outlook – 7.5%

Covers the proportion of international students, international academic staff, and the breadth of international research collaboration. This pillar reflects how globally connected a university is.

Industry – 4%

Measures income from industry partnerships relative to staff numbers, reflecting the university’s ability to transfer knowledge into commercial applications.

This is the section that matters most for students using rankings to make decisions.

Both THE and QS are credible and widely used. But they prioritise different things – and a university’s position can differ substantially between the two systems because of this.

Employer reputation – present in QS, absent in THE

QS allocates 15% of its score to an Employer Reputation survey – asking over 100,000 employers globally which universities produce the best graduates. THE does not include employer reputation at all. This means QS is the more useful ranking for students focused on graduate employment outcomes, while THE is more useful for students focused on research quality.

Research quality – heavily weighted in THE, moderate in QS

THE allocates 30% to Research Quality through citation analysis. QS allocates 20% to Citations per Faculty. THE’s approach is generally considered more rigorous in how it normalises citation data across different field sizes.

Teaching environment – stronger emphasis in THE

THE’s Teaching pillar at 29.5% is specifically designed to capture the quality of the learning environment through multiple indicators. QS measures Faculty to Student Ratio at 10% but does not have an equivalent multi-indicator teaching pillar.

Sustainability – present in QS, absent in THE

QS introduced a Sustainability indicator worth 5% in recent editions. THE does not include sustainability as a separate pillar in the main global ranking – though it publishes a separate THE Impact Rankings focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

International outlook – similar emphasis

Both rankings reward international diversity, though they measure it slightly differently. QS measures international faculty and students as separate indicators. THE combines international students, staff, and research collaboration into one pillar worth 7.5%.

Reputation surveys – both use them, differently

QS places 30% on Academic Reputation. THE uses its own Academic Reputation Survey but weights it as part of the Teaching and Research pillars rather than as a standalone indicator – reducing the risk of reputation alone driving a university’s rank.

The honest answer remains the same as always – use both, but for different purposes.

Use THE if:

• You are comparing universities in the same country or region where QS and THE give different results

Use QS if:

Use subject rankings from both:

For most students, the subject-specific rankings published by both QS and THE are more relevant than overall global ranks. A university ranked #200 overall may be ranked #30 in your specific field. Always check the subject ranking for your programme before making a decision based on the overall table.
