Those employers hire from these universities year after year, creating a hiring pipeline that students benefit from directly.

However, this brand premium diminishes quickly with experience. A professional with five years of relevant work experience is hired on what they have done, not where they studied. The prestige advantage of a research university degree is most powerful at the entry point, the first job and becomes less determinative over time.

A student who pays premium fees for a research university but does not use the research environment, does not benefit from the prestige pipeline, and does not access the industry connections of a more applied institution has made a costly choice with diminishing returns.

Research universities prioritise graduate-level support and research resources. Undergraduate pastoral support varies widely; some research universities have excellent support; others treat undergraduates as secondary to their research mission.
