Those employers hire from these universities year after year, creating a hiring pipeline that students benefit from directly.

At a research university, the career services are often excellent but less tailored to specific industries. The prestige of the brand opens doors, but the institutional relationship with employers is often less specific.

The question of value is not simply which degree is cheaper. It is which degree, in your specific field, for your specific goals, delivers the best return on the investment you make financially and in time.

A student who pays premium fees for a research university but does not use the research environment, does not benefit from the prestige pipeline, and does not access the industry connections of a more applied institution has made a costly choice with diminishing returns.

What this means for you: Match the institution type to what you will actually use. Do not pay for research infrastructure you will not access. Do not discount a teaching-focused university because it does not have a famous name.
