The Institute of Health and Management (IHM) Australia offers a 2-year Master of Nursing across campuses in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. With three intakes per year, AHPRA registration support, free NCLEX and OSCE preparation, and a clear pathway to Australian nursing practice, it is one of the most structured pathways for internationally qualified nurses.

What Is IHM and Why Does It Matter?

Blog image

The Institute of Health and Management (IHM) is an Australian higher education provider accredited by TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency), Australia’s national higher education regulator. IHM specialises exclusively in health and care education, with campuses in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth.

Since 2019, IHM has supported over 1,700 internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMs) through the registration pathway in Australia. The institution is built around a single purpose: preparing nurses, both local and international, to work in Australia’s healthcare system.

The Master of Nursing is IHM’s flagship postgraduate programme, combining advanced clinical knowledge with a structured pathway toward Australian nursing registration.

IHM’s Master of Nursing is not an ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) approved programme and does not lead to direct AHPRA registration. Nurses seeking Australian registration after completing the degree must separately complete the Outcomes-Based Assessment (OBA) process, which includes NCLEX-RN and OSCE examinations. IHM provides preparation support for both at no additional cost to enrolled students.

Who Is This Programme For?

The Master of Nursing at IHM is designed specifically for:

  • Registered nurses who hold a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent qualification from outside Australia
  • AHPRA-registered nurses already in Australia who want to advance to leadership and specialist roles
  • International nurses seeking to build the academic foundation and clinical knowledge needed for Australian nursing practice

This is not a programme for people with no nursing background. Applicants must already hold a recognised nursing qualification and be currently registered (or eligible to register) as a nurse in their home country.

What Career Pathways Does It Open?

Completing the Master of Nursing not only advances your clinical expertise and leadership capabilities but also strengthens your long-term career prospects in healthcare. For international students looking to study in Australia, the programme provides a pathway to develop advanced nursing skills while positioning graduates for senior clinical, management, and leadership roles across Australia’s healthcare sector.

Common career outcomes for IHM graduates include:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Nurse Educator
  • Associate Nurse Unit Manager
  • Clinical Nurse
  • Staff Development Nurse

Australian healthcare is one of the strongest graduate employment markets in the country, with consistent demand across hospitals, community health centres, aged care facilities, and primary care settings. Nurses with postgraduate qualifications consistently command higher salaries and faster career progression than those with undergraduate credentials alone.

The AHPRA Registration Pathway: What Happens After the Degree?

This is the most important section for internationally qualified nurses (IQNMs) to understand. Here is the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Self-Check: Complete the free AHPRA self-check online to determine which registration stream applies to you (Stream A, B, or C).

Step 2: IQNM Assessment: Submit your application to AHPRA with a non-refundable assessment fee of AUD $640.

Step 3: Orientation Part A: 90-minute online video orientation and quiz completed online.

Step 4: Portfolio Stage: Upload all required attested documents through the AHPRA portal.

Step 5: NCLEX-RN: Sit the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) at a Pearson VUE test centre. Fee: USD $350 total (~AUD $504) covering registration ($200 USD) and international scheduling ($150 USD).

IHM provides a 100% scholarship for NCLEX and OSCE preparation to enrolled Master of Nursing students; this preparation support is free.

Step 6: OSCE: Sit the Objective Structured Clinical Examination, a clinical simulation assessment conducted by AHPRA. Fee: AUD $2,000.

Step 7: Orientation Part B: Final orientation stage before registration is granted.

NOTE: IHM has supported over 1,700 internationally qualified nurses through the AHPRA registration pathway since 2019. IHM offers Outcomes-Based Assessment (OBA) preparation at no cost to enrolled students, including NCLEX and OSCE preparation through its Careers Advancement Programs. This is a significant practical support not available at all providers, particularly valuable for nurses working towards Australian registration alongside their studies.

What Does IHM Offer Beyond the Classroom?

  • 100% NCLEX and OSCE Scholarship: Enrolled Master of Nursing students receive full scholarship coverage for NCLEX and OSCE preparation, meaning IHM covers the cost of preparation training for both licensing examinations required for AHPRA registration.
  • Clinical Placement Support: IHM organises clinical placements nationally, connecting students with public hospitals, private hospitals, GP clinics, and aged care facilities.
  • Student Support Services: Dedicated student support, career counselling, a 24/7 online library, disability and accessibility support, and on-campus pastoral care across all three campuses.
  • Industry Connections: IHM maintains active partnerships with healthcare facilities and clinical organisations across Australia, supporting graduate employment outcomes.
How Do You Apply?

Step 1: Visit application.ihm.edu.au and apply online

Step 2: If you meet eligibility requirements, an admissions counsellor will contact you for an interview

Step 3: After a successful interview, you receive an offer letter

Step 4: Accept the offer and pay the enrolment fee

Step 5: Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

Step 6: Apply for your Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) using the CoE

NOTE for International Students: International students studying on a student visa are required to study full-time; part-time study is not permitted under your visa conditions and the ESOS Act 2000.
