To receive the scholarship, you must:

  • Be a new international fee-paying student, not a continuing student, and not a transfer mid-degree student
  • Register for year one or year two of a full-time undergraduate degree in the Department of Physics at Strathclyde, starting September 2026
  • Be a self-funded student; students who already receive a full scholarship from a government office or embassy are not eligible.

NOTE: You can only receive one scholarship per academic year from the University of Strathclyde. If you are being offered another Strathclyde scholarship,  the university will apply the most favourable arrangement to your enrolment, but you cannot stack multiple Strathclyde awards.

NOTE: The scholarship cannot be deferred or transferred to any other entry point. It is for September 2026 only. If you defer your entry to a later year, you will need to check whether the scholarship is still available for that intake.

NOTE: If you transfer out of the Department of Physics into another degree during your studies, you will no longer be eligible for this scholarship. It is specifically tied to Physics programmes within the Department of Physics.

What Physics Programmes Does Strathclyde Offer?

For students looking to study in the UK, the Department of Physics at University of Strathclyde offers a research-led undergraduate programme fully accredited by the Institute of Physics, ensuring high academic standards and strong career prospects in physics and related fields.

The flagship programme is the BSc Physics, a 4-year degree (standard in Scotland) that builds on core foundations in the first year, through specialist topics, to a research project in the later years. The curriculum covers theoretical, experimental, and computational physics in an integrated way, including a maths curriculum taught by physicists rather than mathematicians, specifically designed for physics students.

Research areas within the department include:

  • Quantum and ultracold atomic physics
  • Photonics and laser physics
  • Plasma physics
  • Astrophysics and space science
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Biophotonics and biophysics

The department runs the David Elder Lectures, a public astronomy lecture series held at the Glasgow Science Centre, and maintains active collaborations with industry and research institutes across Scotland and internationally.

NOTE: The BSc Physics degree at Strathclyde is accredited by the Institute of Physics, which means your degree meets the professional standards required for Chartered Physicist (CPhys) status later in your career. This accreditation matters for employers in science, engineering, defence, and technology sectors.

What Does the £7,000 Actually Mean for Your Fees?

The University of Strathclyde’s international undergraduate tuition fees for 2026–27 are approximately £21,700 per year for most Science programmes (fees are subject to annual review and can increase by up to 10% per year from 2026/27 onwards, capped at that rate for continuing students).

With the £7,000 scholarship applied:

Without Scholarship: ~£21,700
With £7,000 Scholarship: ~£14,700
Annual Saving: £7,000

Over a 4-year BSc degree, that is a total saving of £28,000 if fees remain constant. Even accounting for annual fee increases, the scholarship represents a very significant reduction in the total cost of your degree.

NOTE: Fee changes are published each October for the following academic year. Any annual increase is capped at a maximum of 10% from 2026/27 onwards for continuing students. The £7,000 scholarship applies to your fee at the rate in your enrolment year and is applied annually. Always check the current fee schedule at strath.ac.uk before making final budget plans.

What About the UK Student Visa?

As an international student studying full-time in the UK, you need a UK Student Visa (Subclass 4).

  • Visa Application Fee: £490 (₹52,430 approx.)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776/year (₹83,032/year) — gives you NHS access.
  • Maintenance Funds Required: £1,334/month × 9 months = £12,006 (₹12.8L approx.) held in bank for 28+ consecutive days
  • TB Test: Mandatory for applicants from most non-UK countries
  • Work Rights: 20 hours/week during term; unlimited during holidays
  • Post-Study: UK Graduate Route visa 2 years of open work rights after graduation (3 years for PhD)

NOTE: Scotland is outside London for UK visa maintenance purposes, so the lower outside-London maintenance requirement (£12,006 total) applies, not the higher London rate. This means you need to show less money in your bank account compared to if you were studying in London.
