Academic Requirements

• Undergraduate Studies: Completed secondary school qualification equivalent to the German Abitur. For Indian students: a recognised Class 12 certificate from CBSE/ISC. Most programmes require strong grades of 90%+ for competitive fields like Medicine and Law.
• Postgraduate studies: A recognised bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS or equivalent). A GPA of roughly 2.5 on the German scale (approx. 65% or higher) is typically expected, but requirements vary significantly by programme.
• PhD/research: A master’s degree or equivalent with a strong academic record. PhD students can enter through structured doctoral programmes or through individual supervision with an LMU professor.

Language Requirements

LMU has two distinct language pathways depending on your programme:

Programme Type: German-taught programmes (most bachelor’s degrees and State Examinations)

• DSH: DSH-2
• TestDaF: TDN 4 in all components
• Goethe-Zertifikat: C2
• DSD: DSD II

Programme Type: English-taught master’s programmes  

• IELTS: 5 overall, no band below 6.0
• TOEFL iBT: 88 overall
• Cambridge C1 Advanced: Minimum C1 level

NOTE: If you want to study a German-taught bachelor’s programme at LMU, you need to reach the C1–C2 level of German. The DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 is the standard proof. LMU’s Studienkolleg (preparatory college) offers a bridging programme for international students who have strong academic qualifications but need to complete German requirements. Admission to the Studienkolleg itself requires at least B2 German.

NOTE for Indian Students: An APS Certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in India) is mandatory for all Indian applicants. It verifies your academic documents and must be obtained before applying. Processing takes time and costs ₹18,000. Apply early. This is a hard requirement, and LMU will not accept your application without it.

NOTE: LMU is strict about deadlines. Missing the deadline means waiting a full semester. For master’s programmes, you apply both to the respective faculty/institute and to the International Office, sometimes with different deadlines. How to Apply

1. Check your eligibility, confirm your qualification is equivalent to the German entry requirements via lmu.de/en/study/degree-students/prerequisites
2. Get your APS Certificate (Indian students). Apply early; this takes weeks
3. Prepare your documents, certified translations, transcripts, language test scores, and CV
4. Apply to the faculty/institute for master’s programmes, and apply directly to the programme coordinator
5. Apply to the International Office, submit your physical application by post by the deadline
6. Receive your letter of admission from the International Office
7. Registration at LMU is mandatory in person or by post within the registration period
8. Apply for your German Student Visa using your letter of admission

Tuition Fees

LMU charges no tuition fees for most standard programmes; however, a few specialised or executive programmes may have fees. This has been the case since the winter semester 2013/14. You pay only the semester contribution each semester.

A small number of special postgraduate and continuing education programmes (such as certain Executive MBAs or professional certificate programmes) do charge tuition fees. These are the exception, not the rule. Always check the specific programme page to confirm.

Living Costs in Munich

Munich is one of Germany’s most expensive cities, particularly for housing. LMU’s own official estimate is approximately €1,500 per month.

NOTE: Housing is the biggest challenge in Munich. University housing is significantly cheaper (€400–600/month), but demand far exceeds availability. Apply for a place in the university dormitory (via the Studierendenwerk München) as soon as you receive your admission letter and accept that you may need to find private accommodation, which can be expensive and competitive. Budget towards the higher end of the range.

NOTE: The German Government requires international students to show a blocked account (Sperrkonto) of €11,904/year (₹10.7L approx.) as proof of financial capacity when applying for a German Student Visa. This is the official 2025 requirement; it is separate from your housing and living costs, which you will draw from this account monthly (€992/month).

Scholarships for International Students

Deutschlandstipendium:

• €300/month for up to standard study duration
• All nationalities are enrolled at LMU; awarded based on academic merit and social commitment. Apply during the annual application period (March–April each year).

DAAD Scholarship for International Students (LMU):

• Semester-based support
• Registered full-time international students completing their first degree at LMU within one year; requires academic excellence + demonstrated financial need. Apply in January–February each year.

DAAD Scholarship with Impairment Support:

• Semester-based support
• Same as above, plus proof of disability, chronic illness, or refugee background.

DAAD Prize:

• €1,000 (one-time award)
• Outstanding international student nominated by LMU professors; not self-applied.

Oskar-Karl-Forster Scholarship:

• Varies
• Bavarian state scholarship for international students; contact the LMU Scholarship Office.

DAAD Doctoral Scholarships (various):

• Approx €1,350/month + allowances

NOTE: After completing your degree in Germany, you can apply for an 18-month job-seeking visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitssuche), which allows you to stay in Germany and look for qualified work without needing an immediate job offer. If you find a job matching your qualifications, this transitions to a work permit and eventually, a pathway to permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis).

Unlike many universities, which have a distinct campus area apart from the city, LMU is actually integrated into Munich. While the main LMU campus, located in the Maxvorstadt district in the midst of Munich’s Museum Quarter, is surrounded by the English Garden, Odeonsplatz, and some of Germany’s top-notch cultural sites, LMU’s medical faculty and university hospital are based in Großhadern, while LMU’s life sciences faculty has its campus in Martinsried, and LMU’s law faculty is located in a magnificent historical building on Ludwigstraße.
