PTE Exam Format
PTE is divided into 3 main parts, all completed in one single sitting of 2 hours.
Part 1: Speaking & Writing
This is the longest and most combined section of PTE. It includes tasks like Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Questions, Summarise Written Text, and Essay Writing. Your speaking responses are recorded and scored by AI. Duration is approximately 54–67 minutes
Part 2: Reading
Tests your ability to understand written English in academic contexts. Includes tasks like Multiple Choice, Re-order Paragraphs, and Fill in the Blanks. Duration is approximately 29–30 minutes.
Part 3: Listening
You listen to audio recordings and answer questions based on what you hear. Includes tasks like Summarise Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, and Write from Dictation. Duration is approximately 30–43 minutes.
IELTS Exam Format
IELTS is divided into 4 separate sections, completed in one day with short breaks.
Section 1: Listening
You listen to 4 recordings of native English speakers and answer 40 questions. Includes conversations, monologues, and discussions on everyday and academic topics. Duration is 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time
Section 2: Reading
Contains 3 long reading passages with 40 questions in total. The academic version uses texts from books, journals, and newspapers. The duration is 60 minutes
Section 3: Writing
- Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, diagram, or map in at least 150 words
- Task 2: Write an essay responding to a point of view or argument in at least 250 words
The duration is 60 minutes
Section 4: Speaking
A face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. Divided into 3 parts: Introduction, Individual Long Turn, and Two-way Discussion. Duration is 11–14 minutes
NOTE: The Speaking test may be held on a different day from the other sections.

If you’re someone who gets tired easily in long exams, PTE’s shorter duration and single-sitting format might work better for you. But if you prefer having more time to think and write, IELTS gives you that extra breathing room.
